On June 8, 2009, the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum held its very popular "ask the judges" dinner at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. We thank all nine judges who attended and the Hon. On April 6, 2009, Hon Alan M. Ahart, John M. Tedford, IV, and Sidney P. Levinson discussed the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel's ruling in Clear Channel Outdoor, Inc. v. Knupfer (In re PW, LLC), 391 B.R. 25 (9th Cir. BAP 2008). Judges Samuel Bufford and Sheri Bluebond provided feedback and commentary from the audience. This was a provocative program on mootness.
On February 10, 2009, the Hon. Dick Gephardt was our dinner speaker. Mr. Gephardt is the Former Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, House Majority Leader, two-time presidential candidate, and current President and CEO of Gephardt Group, a multi-disciplined consulting firm. Gephardt was a very polished -- and funny -- speaker. Benjamin Seigel and J. Scott Bovitz also spoke about the legacy of Joe Bernfeld.
On December 3, 2008, the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum, the Financial Lawyers Conference, the Turnaround Management Association, the California Receivers Forum, the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section held a “Second Annual Insolvency Professionals' Holiday Party" at the Elevate Lounge. Through our receipts and the kind donations of our sponsors, we help support the efforts of Public Counsel, Neighborhood Legal Services, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and others who contribute to those in need of bankruptcy-related services in our community.
On October 6, 2008, Joseph Fuszard (Senior Vice President, National Executive Real Estate Special Assets & Bank of America), Michael L. Tuchin (Klee, Tuchin, Bogdanoff & Stern LLP), Ronald F. Greenspan (West Region Corporate Finance Practice Leader, National Leader -- Corporate Finance Real Estate Restructuring, FTI Consulting), and Matthew Levy (General Counsel, Regent Properties) spoke on "What the Current Housing Market Collapse Means for Insolvency Practitioners and Key Stakeholders." The program was full of good news for local bankruptcy practioners.
