On April 1, 2013, the LABF held a lively discussion on such issues as conflicts of interest, breach of ethical requirements, disqualification from representation, and sanctions. We thank our panel:
Hon. Vincent P. Zurzolo - U.S. Bankruptcy Judge
Hatty Yip - Office of the United States Trustee
Martin R. Barash - Klee Tuchin Bogdanoff & Stern LLP
Uzzi O. Raanan - Danning Gill Diamond & Kollitz LLP
On February 4, the LABF was pleased to welcome Irving H. Picard, the court-appointed trustee under SIPA in the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. Mr. Picard met privately with the younger lawyers -- thank you! -- and then presented an update on the status of the Madoff Recovery Initiative. Irving H. Picard is a partner in the law firm Baker Hostetler. In 2008, U.S. District Judge Lawrence McKenna appointed Picard trustee of assets seized by the court from Bernard Madoff. Since then, he has been centrally involved in the recovery of funds from the Madoff investment scandal.
The panelists discussed various first day motions including cash collateral, utilities, critical vendors, insider compensation, employee issues and cash management systems. Panelists: Hon. Neil W. Bason (pointed tips from the bench); Marsha A. Houston, Reed Smith LLP (the friendly secured creditor's viewpoint); Victor A. Sahn, Sulmeyer Kupetz (the calm chapter 11 debtor's lawyer); Brad Smith, GlassRatner (the man behind the numbers). Thanks, everyone!
